European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
