Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
