The English along with Wales Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland also share a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
